Legislative Update: August 6, 2019
Last Thursday, August 1st, the Senate considered and passed the “Bipartisan Budget Act of 2019 (H.R. 3877)”. This legislation will fund the federal government for the next two years. Specifically, H.R. 3877 would provide $1.3 trillion in government funding and would allow the government to keep borrowing to cover its debts.
The President signed H.R. 3877 into law on August 2nd. The Senate adjourned shortly after passing the budget legislation. The Congress is now in recess and will return after the Labor Day holiday.
Now that H.R. 3877 is in place, the Appropriations Committees will turn to determining specific funding for each federal agency and related programs. This will work will begin when Congress returns to Washington in September.
When the Congress returns in the fall, it is expected that proposals to reduce prescription drug costs and to limit surprise medical billing will continue to be a key focus in the health arena.
